J. Rayner's Shop, Middle Street

Date: 1904

Middle Street was a complete row of shops in the centre of Queen Street. It was originally called the Flesh Shambles as this was where all the butchers shops were located. The block was demolished between 1898 and 1905, and the final shop left standing was Rayners Drapers, as the Council struggled to agree a price for the purchase of the property. Finally a settlement of £4,827 was agreed in 1905, and demolition of Middle Street was completed, with Rayners moving to new premises on Queen Street.
